I have been working at IBM for the last ten years and the only reason I have been able to do so is because of the employee friendly policies of the company. When I sarted here I was a fresher and now I am a manager. I married and had kids during my tenure here and the management was always supportive. This positive atmosphere helped me to grow.

The sad part of working in a company during recession is that you get to know how inefficient the management is. I have seen many of my seniors who claimed to be great, fail to give any leadership at this bad time. The management has done very little for the employees and we can only think of the time passing away fast.

I was quite surprised by the negative feedback in this this site. The situation is not that bad as it is made out to be! Yes we do have problem but then again which company is not having it! But I am sure we are going to emerge stronger.

As an employee at IBM I can tell that the morale here is at its lowest. The market situation is bad and there is no guarantee how long we will have our jobs. The management people must be scared too but they never share their anxiety with us. In my opinion the whole situation would be better if we had regular meetings in the office and received updates about the situation of the company. Sharing the problems could have made us pass through these troubled days easier.

Boy am I glad to be out even after a "1" appraisal and a "top performer" raise of 3%. They boil you slowly with decreasing raises and benefits as you move up the ladder. It's funny to see all these grateful young kids that don't realize they are squandering their full potential and youth here.
If you do come to IBM, consider it only for 1-3 years and only in the software group or finance. Hardware is no longer the way to career growth here and services is a real meat grinder. Remote work? Yeah, as long as you pay for everything since they are making folks pay for anything other than a basic cell phone. Remote access, cable, DSL, no longer will be expensed for anyone. Laptops are klunkers, kept for about 3-6 years, depending on your job classification. They also only rarely pay for an advanced degree, and even so, there are no special bennies for MBA types. Expenses take weeks to get, bonuses take 90+ days and require you to stay so you can't leave after scoring a big sale. Intellectual property and personal independent work prohibited, they pursue you legally if you go to work for a client. 401(k) is more expensive and has less options than HP. Not the kind of environment that promotes retention, since they don't care about you.

During this very challenging times, I am proud to be an IBMer. Hard work and dedication pay off, but you must be willing to make sacrifices. IBM rewards those who show a commitment to the team, their client's success, and help drive change for a better world. With such a major investment in Research and Development, IBM will continue to provide innovation that matters to the US and the rese of the world.

It is impossible to work in IBM if anyone has the least sense of self esteem. The people who work in lead positions have no respect for their team members and treat them as slaves. I worked there for 7 years and I was so frustrated that I felt like killing myself sometimes. The pay was much below industry standards and my manager made me work for at least ten to twelve hours every day. I had no intention of living my life this way and I quit my job there.

At my office I practically meet a new guy every day. The management seems to be in a hiring spree and anyone with an engineering degree will get a job here. No one cares to find out if we really need those people because we already have a huge workforce sitting on the bench. Instead of hiring new people the management should try and use the existing employees. I have not worked in any project in the last one year and if I have to sit idle like this any longer I will become obsolete in the fast changing technology market.

For me, IBM has been a great platform to start my career! Here I got the opportunity to handle a lot of new technical applications and face several challenges. It has provided me with sufficient time and prospects needed to develop in the professional field. Being in IBM, I have learnt the value of team spirit and the art of respecting every individual employee present. But the only difficult thing of IBM is that it puts in too much stress on lessening costs especially of the training classes. As a result, the quality of training imparted to all the employees has come down a bit.

IBM is good for you only if you are working in the senior management position. Otherwise, you will be paid poorly, over burdened with work and then one day you will be told that your job is being shifted to India or some other country to cut cost! And all these will be done so that those in the power position continue their extravagant lifestyle.
