I have been working here for some years and I feel sad to see that the quality of management is going down every year. The people who run the business are out trying to make profits for themselves and not for the company. I find it hard to support my family with the salary I get here. I really feel like quitting.

The company is fast losing its hold in the market. There are big competition out there but the think tank are not paying any attention to them! They still think that nothing can beat them. If they don't wake up soon, we will be in bigger problem in coming years.

Symantec has a management which lives in its own world and never bothers to waste time thinking about the future of the company and its employees. We are having a lot of problems and if we do not take care of them now it will become very difficult for the company to exist in the future. I have no idea how we will see us through this recession without having any proper strategy. The management really needs to change their attitude or the company won??™t be able to survive.

I've been with Symantec (and Veritas before the merger) several years and have seen ups and downs. Last 2-3 years since the merger were really bad. The company was drifting aimlessly without any clear strategy. Atmosphere was really negative. A lot of political games were going on and people were watching their backs and not focused on the business. Execs were fighting and folks at the top weren't connected to the business - they had no clue what the Veritas side is doing. Sales & marketing was a complete mess. Many sequential rounds of layoffs just made things even worse for employees. The morale in the PM and engineering ranks dropped to an all-time low.
I've seen some improvement in the past 6-9 months. There's been a renewed focus on a cohesive direction for the company (albeit the "secure & manage world's information" strategy is still very high level and quite abstract). Also, there seems to be a genuine attempt at rebuilding some of the lost morale and culture. JWT and Enrique probably noticed that they need to fix things and have made some efforts.
Still, it's not easy. We just had an across-the-board reduction-in-force and people here (especially those with Veritas heritage) can't count anymore how many RIFs we've gone thru. I think it's really hard to boost morale efforts when we're having continuous layoffs.
Personally, I think the comp and benefits are quite OK. Base salary is good but bonuses are poor. I can't understand why bonuses are so small. And nowadays they aren't even connected to your own performance - very strange. I guess it's a way for Beer (the CFO) to protect earnings by tying bonuses only to financial goal achievement. I really dislike that. They should increase bonus %s by 10-20 and add back in the performance component.
I'd be curious to hear from other SYMC colleagues whether they see things the same way - happy to debate...

Symantec is simply an amazing fortune 500 company working on cutting edge technology. At my location there are no cubicles, only offices, and I think that sums up Symantec's ideals. Treat the employees well, pay them what they are work, provide a great atmosphere, and reward them for their hard work; in return, the employees will work their tails off for you. Unlike Microsoft or Google, there is little to no crunch time (required nonpaying overtime) at Symantec. Symantec has extremely low turnover because the package is just that good.

Symantec is a fantastic company that truly cares about its employees. The company has a very clear direction and strategy and measures its progress on these quarterly (which every employee can see). In contrast to the several other companies I've worked at, Symantec delivers excellence in its products and helps its employees reach excellence in their careers. The far majority of the leadership (VP and above) is extremely smart and well attuned to the markets, customers, and the employees. I cannot speak any higher of Symantec as an organization.

I have been with Symantec since the company started and everyday is worse than the day before. The place is being run by people who have absolutely no idea about business and think that employees should only get low salaries and hardly any benefits. Since there is totally no communication between the management and the employees we cannot tell them that one has to be happy to do any good work and frustrated people can only be average. If the company does not wake up to this fact then it will be very difficult for it to survive.

Working in Symantec is a tough job because I have to work very hard but my pay is nowhere near the present market standards. I regularly hear from the management that the company is facing loses so we have to bear with the cutbacks but I never see their salary or benefits getting cut. And if the company is really in trouble we should all together try to find way to solve the existing problems. But our management is so short sighted that they never take the employees into confidence and treat us with total disregard.

At Symantec I always know all the people above me and they go out of their way to make me comfortable with my work. The company has given me the freedom to set my work schedules according to my preferences and that helps me balance my work and personal commitments perfectly. The company is still growing so I am always learning new things and the company also encourages me to share my views which may help in the growing process. The salary I get here is good enough to keep me happy and the company offers some good benefits to all its employees among which the employee stock program is really very good
